Sophomore Mark Eberhard will represent Henderson High School for the second time at the Region V-5A Swimming and Diving Championship at Texas A&M University for a chance to advance to State. Preliminaries for the meet are Feb. 1, and finals are Feb. 2.
“Our region is fast,” Eberhard said. “But I’ve been training for this, and I’m looking forward to a great two days of racing.”
This regional swim meet will determine whether or not Eberhard will get the chance to advance to State.
“I am excited for the competition,” Eberhard said. “It will be a good race. I will have to get a personal record in order to win it.”
To advance to state, a swimmer can either place first or second or get “called up,” which happens in some of the fastest regions. Where if a swimmer has one of the top eight fastest times across the state, he’ll advance as well.
“This is great because the top 6 boys from this region all went to State last year based on their times,” Eberhard said. “It helps keep the State meet as fast as possible.”
Last year, Eberhard won both the District and Regional swim meets, as well as advanced to finals in the State competition.
“I have a great coach and support that help me focus on what I need to do,” Eberhard said. “Swimming is hard work, but it is fun. At the end of the day, I just want to touch the wall first and drop time off my personal best.”
