This year Henderson High School has participated in several UIL events including journalism, debate, and computer science.
To kick off the new UIL season, the HHS journalists competed in their first tournament hosted at HHS on Sept. 19. With junior Ashley Wilkinson, sophomore Alexis Overton, sophomore Erin Burris, junior Mia Hay, and junior Riley Foster, it goes without saying that the journalists this year are a one-of-a-kind team.
Less than a week later in Maybank on Sept. 22, Burris landed first place in Lincoln Douglas debate, with freshman Carter Wheat trailing close behind, coming in second. Senior Allison Buckner placed first in Congress while Wilkinson and freshman Brooklyn Conert placed third in CX debate. Although the debate team was successful all around, the efforts of the other UIL teams did not go unrecognized. Not only did the debate team show off their great efforts, but our computer science team did as well. Senior Clint Boyett, junior Ethan Mccarthy, Senior Riordan Brown, and junior Mason Craig placed first as a group.
The debate team then traveled to Maybank again on Oct. 20, with Buckner and Wheat in Congress and Conert and Wilkinson in CX.
On Nov. 3, the journalism and debate team went to Lindale to sweep the podium once again. Buckner placed first in Original Oratory and first in Congress. Conert advanced to Extemporaneous Speaking finals, and Wilkinson placed first in Feature Writing and second in News Writing.
The journalism team entered another tournament Nov. 14. Foster placed second in Editorial Writing, Hay placed second in Feature Writing, and Wilkinson placed first in News Writing, first in Copy Editing, and third in Feature Writing. Overton and Burris also competed at the tournament.
It is clear that these students’ efforts have paid off for not only them but their reputations as well. With an amazing start to this school, the rest can only get better.
